Why We Celebrate Breakthrough Moments
As a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) in the field of autism for over 15 years, I’ve been fortunate to see the power of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) throughout my career. ABA-based treatment in autism is all about figuring out what specialized learning tools will work for each child and applying them. Over time, I’ve watched children learn incredible skills that we know from research kids with autism and other special needs wouldn’t have learned had they not had ABA in their lives.
I believe that it is critical to celebrate each and every skill that a child learns along their journey. At Breakthrough Autism, we appreciate that these milestones are unique for each and every child we work with. They may take time and hard work to achieve. Reaching these milestones represents huge breakthroughs in a child’s life. So when kids reach them, we love to celebrate!
Here are just a few of our favourite breakthrough moments:
– Learning to ride a bike
– Explaining to a friend how to play a game and then playing it
– Learning to look at a friend when they call their name
– Using the toilet independently
– Learning how to manage conflicts with friends and family
– Learning how to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) or other communication systems (e.g., Springboards, iPads)
– Having conversations with friends about what they did while on vacation
– Asking for their mom, dad, sister, brother or friend
– Learning how to play a sport by watching a friend
– Learning how to deal with things when they don’t go as planned
Isn’t it amazing what kids with autism can learn with help of ABA?
That’s why when I started Breakthrough Autism, we created a company that offers premium customized ABA-based treatment for kids with autism and their families AND celebrates breakthrough moments. We celebrate with our breakthrough families, with our amazing team of professionals, by recognizing our shinning stars, by sharing our success stories, and by showcasing our gratitude board.
We’d love to hear from you too! What are your favourite breakthrough moments and how do you celebrate them? Send us a tweet, a message on Facebook, or a picture on instagram with the hastag #breakthroughmoments
